Antwerp Wedding Photography // Robyn & David
Robyn and David’s wedding was quite different to the ones I normally document. For a start it was in Antwerp, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, and due to the natives’ love of chips, chocolate, beer and cycling, one I am very fond of.
Secondly, the day was starting with a very early ceremony, and not through the couple’s choice. Belguim has different rules, in that you don’t choose the time you want to get married, the town hall gives you a time and you have to accept it. So I arrived, somewhat bleary eyed, at Robyn’s hotel, the stunning Hotel de Witte Lelie, at 7am. Despite the early hour, Robyn and the girls were easing into the day with a glass of champagne, and hair and makeup were in full swing by the time i arrived.
It was a grey, dull and drizzly morning, but Robyn cut a striking figure with her flame red hair, as we arrived in Grote Markt, the city’s main square where the incredible 16th century town hall stands. The ceremony was very short and served its purpose, and due to it being performed in David’s native language, Flemish, which is a language Robyn doesn’t speak due to be an Aussie. Robyn received a quick nudge from David every time she needed to give a response. After the ceremony, we took a few photos in the square before heading to the pub for some strong Belgium beer.
Due to the early morning ceremony and the strong local beers, the afternoon was a time for the guests (and the photographer) to rest or explore the city, before the evening celebrations.
The reception was taking place back at Hotel de Witte Lelie, and dinner was very casual and not a sit down affair. Belgium beer flowed all night, and after a few speeches and an impromptu bouquet toss, movers and shakers hit the floor.
I really enjoyed Robyn and David’s day, they are a very relaxed couple and this was reflected in the easy going and fun wedding they had.
